“Please, your majesty, don’t pay attention to this worthless man Nabal, for he’s just like his name. Nabal is his name and folly is his constant companion. But I, your servant, didn’t see your majesty’s young men whom you sent” (1 Samuel 25:25 ISV).

Don’t marry a fool! Who you marry will ultimately determine what you become. Your best or worst will come out depending on who you marry. The right marriage gets the best out of us, the wrong marriage does otherwise. While God sovereignly and strategically joins us to the right people so we can maximize our destiny, the devil subtly wants to join us to the wrong people so as to truncate our destiny. One of such wrong joining is in relationships and marriage.

“When a person marries wrongly, about 80 percent of his or her usefulness in life and destiny is gone.” Listen, except if you have not been ordained to marry, who you marry will determine what you become. Don’t let the social media redefine marriage for you; God’s original plan for marriage must be your guide. “Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their labour(Ecclesiastes 4:9)”, is still as valid today as it was when it was written. This is God’s original intent and plan, that two good people, two wise people, two purpose-minded people, are better than one!

What happens when someone marries a fool? Or why do wise people marry fools? Why do fire brand brothers or sisters marry fire extinguishers? Why do sons of God marry daughters of Belial? Why do God-fearing ladies marry a guy who has no regard for God? While there could be numerous reasons why this could happen, I would want to address just one of them today. I want to address impatience. A lot of people marry wrongly today because of impatience. Listen, God’s best are still ahead of you, don’t make quick and uninformed choices. Let the revelation of Divine Purpose and Timing guide you as you make a choice of who to marry.

When I read our opening text, I could only wonder why Abigail married Nabal, a fool. Her problem was not divine revelation because he knew who Nabal was and who David was, by revelation. Her problem was probably that of impatience. She married Nabal before David showed up! What about you? Are you going to wait for divine choice or you would hurriedly marry Satan’s alternative because of your age, people’s time table, opinion and all that? Will you allow your sense of divine revelation and timing to guide your choice, or will you bow to pressure?

You need to prioritize divine wisdom and guidance this season. You must never allow the devil, your flesh or people’s opinion to colour your perception. You must be guided by divine revelation. For engaged singles, it is never too late to get out of that wrong relationship. A broken courtship is better than a broken marriage. It is better to be single, hoping to be married, than to be married praying to be single.

And in case you ‘feel’ that you have married wrongly, let God turn things around for you. Let God mend your broken heart and repair your broken marriage. It’s good that Abigail was still in her right senses even when Nabal was playing the fool. Listen, it does not matter who your spouse is at the moment, don’t play the fool, don’t play the wayward, don’t play the wicked. Continue to seek God, pray for your spouse, love him or her, go for counsel and trust God to turn things around. God has not planned marriage to only be endured, He wants it to be enjoyed. You need wisdom, you need revelation, you need divine help to make it work. May your marriage succeed in Jesus name!
